Behind ever great rider is a great mechanic. Steven Gravenites, aka “Gravy,” grew up in the birthplace of mountain biking— Marin County, California—and caught the bug at a young age.
He developed a passion for working on bikes that eventually turned
into a career wrenching for some of our sport’s most legendary
riders. For many years, Gravy was the only one they trusted to keep
their bikes rolling smooth and their wheels spinning true in more
countries than we care to count. Gravy once told us: “My toolbox
took me around the world; not the other way around.”
His early career was spent with some of the most dominant race
teams, where he used his skills as one of the best wrenches. Today,
Gravy can be found burning the midnight oil building wheels or wak-
ing up early to wrench for the pros under the Marin Bikes tent. We
sat down with this legend to see what we could learn from a man
who has seen more in the mountain bike world than nearly anyone
else will ever see.
