Thomas Vanderham —St. George, Utah (2017): I enjoy using strobes in creative ways
where possible and applicable. Since the arrival of drones, I was intrigued to one day
strap one to a drone and use it to get the flash into unique places for lighting in dramatic
ways, especially in the incredible places in Utah. Terrain can look good when illuminated
naturally from above. I was able to create a pool of light in this terrain where Thomas was
riding to feature the area in a way where light-stands and gear would have been visible in
the past before drone use. What a new creative tool the drone can play in photography.
Greg Minnaar in his hometown of Pietermaritzburg, South Africa (2017): We were
doing a profile on Greg for Shimano called “This Is Home.” We spent an amazing week
with Greg watching him do off-season training and having some normal-life time. He has
an amazing family and a group of friends that he gives as much time as possible, given
he spends most of his year on the road racing World Cups. Here he was getting ready to
do shuttle laps of his local trails. His dad is his shuttle driver and part-time coach.

Booy—Reunion Island, Indian Ocean
(2017): Reunion Island is a French colony
and therefore has a rich cycling culture.
Many people from France winter here.
Reunion Island has high peaks and steep
terrain and is full of world-class mountain
bikers and terrain.
and Rene Wildhaber
near Dzong, Nepal
(2011): This was during
a film shoot for Anthill
Films’ Strength in
Numbers. We spent
two weeks discovering
epic trails and the local
people in the Himalaya
Mountains. The high
altitudes made the
work very challenging,
but the views and light
helped drive us along.
