Every bit counts: While a sluggish bike is never fun, extra friction is especially
annoying when you are giving it everything you have in a race.
Gear selection: Aside from riding with a
dirty chain, riding in gear combinations
that require the chain to cross at an
extreme angle, such as from the big
chainring in the front to the big cog in
the rear, causes excess drag on the drivetrain. Additionally, consistently “
cross-chaining” shortens the lifespan of the
chain itself. When you can, pick gear
selections that keep the chain at less
extreme angles, even if it means shifting
gears in the front to accommodate.
When in doubt, look
fast: We’re sure polishing your frame
won’t equate to any
real-world improvements in speed by
decreasing aerodynamic drag, but a
clean bike just makes
us feel faster.
