Confidence is key. When I am challenged or
scared on a trail, I try to stay loose, look where I
want to go, and remember that speed is my friend.
If it is a section that I have to stop to look at, I
keep looking until I can visualize myself riding it
When I am feeling off, a lot of times I will reca-librate by focusing on a skill that I feel good about
for a while. Instead of beating my head against
the wall, trying something that I can’t clean over
and over again, I will take a quick break and ride
something that is flowing better for me that day,
then I’ll come back to the challenge and hopefully
I don’t have any rituals or superstitions,
although I do like to throw in a little one-legged/
one-handed pedaling to get the core muscles firing
and make sure I am balanced on the bike.
When I am in a race (or if I am dropped by
a friend on a climb, or just daunted by a gnarly
hill), I always make sure to focus on riding faster,
not harder. It’s amazing how big a difference that
subtle change in thought makes.
When the trail pushes my limits, I
think about how much time I’ve put in
on the bike, and if someone else can ride
it, I know I can too. When it’s finally
time to man up, I try to keep my brain
from telling me I’m going to bail and just
go for it. The rush you get after nailing
something you’re scared of is pretty special.
If I’m having a bad race, I’ll find myself
listening to the announcer and hearing
the race while it’s going on. I try to think
of all the hard work I’ve put in to getting
ready for the race and snap myself back
into race mode. Sometimes getting a good
song stuck in my head can be a great
When just out riding, I like to listen to
music to keep motivated. I’ll also try to
motivate myself by using a reward, like
if I clean this descent or ride a certain
power or time up a climb, I can have
some food I would normally not eat.
When I’m doing a big block of training
and am tired, I like to visualize myself
in the race I’m training for. I always picture myself riding well, and next thing
I know, my heart rate is higher and the
time is passing by more quickly.
