Beautiful beast: Don’t let the
beautiful lines of the Generic
Cycles’ Ultimate fool you. This
is no show pony, and that is the
best thing about your mountain
dream bike. The result shouldn’t be
admired in a studio; it needs to be
ridden on a trail.
Big wheels: Chris Herting of 3D Racing is the guy who can
take your idea from a sketch and turn it into a rolling reality.
No, a motorcycle wheel does not figure into 3D Racing’s next
project. We had Chris hold it for comparison.
TIME AND MONEY
So, how much is this dream bike going to cost you?
That depends on how much homework you have done. If
you are starting with a cocktail-napkin drawing, it is not
unthinkable that a custom fabricator would need to spend
a solid month translating your scribble into a workable
blueprint. That will set you back $5000 to $8000—and the
bike hasn’t been made yet. If you start your dream-bike
construction with detailed, CAD-generated drawings, you
can virtually eliminate the costly translation.
The cost for constructing your dream bike can run as
high as $10,000 or as low as $3000, depending on how
intricate your idea. Components get added onto this price.
And, you have to be patient. A company like 3D Racing
can turn around a dream-bike order in three to four weeks,
but we can’t speak for other custom builders. Be forewarned: many custom builders are as unique and eccentric
as the bikes they fabricate (Chris is actually a pretty darn
normal guy), and they may not use a clock or calendar to
measure time. Horror stories of taking a custom builder to
small-claims court or waiting a year for a bike are, unfortunately, not unheard of. And since almost all these fabricators will need a deposit or full payment up front, you
have to be comfortable with the person or business you are
Creating a dream bike is not for everyone. Many riders
can find their dream bike right there on the rack at their
favorite bicycle shop. But, if you are one of those riders
who has an idea brewing in his mind, or you have a
unique body type that can’t be accommodated by
traditional designs, creating your dream bike can be a
rewarding experience. ❏
