And Float X
Fox RRD (Redefining Ride
Dynamics) is taking the long-travel
trailbike segment of our sport seriously
with their offering of the all-new and
highly modified 2013 TALAS fork and
Float X shock. Both components have
been optimized for the unique needs of
long-travel trailbikes. In a nutshell, Fox
has gone back to the drawing board
and not only reworked the feel of the
components, but also totally redesigned
their one-year-old remote lever design.
New remote: The large spoon-shaped remote
lever introduced last year has already been
upgraded to this more compact, improved, ergo-nomically shaped thumb lever. The new system
reduces clutter with a dual remote that utilizes a
single cable with splitter.
A nac-nac for riding:
Jeremy “King of Supercross”
McGrath is an avid mountain
biker who showed up on the
Hood River trails to sample
the new Fox components.
The internal changes to the new TALAS
fork include an increased compression ratio
of the air spring for the 34 fork series and
increased compression damping of the CTD
(Climb, Trail and Descend) system across
the board for a firm compression rate on all
The CTD gets tuning changes at all levels:
First, to give better control in Descend mode
(by holding the fork up higher in its travel);
second, to produce an all-around tune in the
middle Trail mode; and third, to create a firm
tune in the Climb mode for less movement.
Fox facts on the TALAS fork:
–Complete redesign offers ride performance
and flexible travel settings for long-travel
–Updated air spring.
–Matches Float shock’s damping
–More supportive in both long- and short-travel settings.
–Reduced seal friction.
–New travel-adjust system.
–Performance claims to more closely match
the coil spring in the first two-thirds of
–Ramps at end for bottom-out support.
–Short-travel mode is rideable in wider
variety of conditions.
–Uses fewer seals than previous design.
– Redesigned the TALAS system using an air-spring design similar to 2014 Float.
– Added inline hydraulic TALAS travel-adjust
– Spacers offer ability to adjust total travel.
– Clip-on travel-range spacer can adjust travel
in 5-millimeter increments.
Clip it: Simple is
usually the best
way to go, and
travel-range spacers can’t get much
simpler or easier
to install. This feature allows for true
